WHO HAS BLESSED YOUR LIFE?

“Through Dixie I finally learned that I could be loved, even though it took nearly two years of daily contact with her before I could believe that it was possible. Through her, I learned the meaning of the word, ‘nurturing.’ She became a ‘mother’ to me in ways my biological mother never could.
"‘Dixie Mom’ modeled for me a nurturing, sensitive mother who felt deeply and wasn't afraid to get herself ‘entangled’ in my emotional world. It was no coincidence that such an incredible woman would move into a small house just a few doors away. It was no coincidence that I had a dream that lead me to her.
“Through Dixie I also learned to trust my ability to hear the Lord. Many times Dixie and I were both confused about how to handle certain situations in my life. We would each go to the Lord separately, and then Dixie would ask me, ‘What did the Lord tell you?’ I would tell her what He told me and invariably she would say that the Lord told her the same thing. We became witnesses for each other.
“During the years that Dixie helped me, different people would often say, ‘It’s so nice that Dixie has time for you!’ Dixie was one of the most involved and busy people I knew. At the time, she had six grown children of her own, 27 grandchildren, and Guy’s three children and grandchildren from a previous marriage. She was a more involved mother and grandmother than any I had ever seen. She also had a church assignment to be a leader and mentor to a group of teenaged girls. She was an art teacher and was even involved in digitizing historical records to aid in genealogical work. The list could go on and on.” (My Tears Fall Inside, page 78-79)

Sometimes for reasons we don’t understand, our biological mothers are emotionally and physically unavailable to us. We will never know all of the heartache they may have experienced or how the events in their own lives have shaped their psyche. What an amazing blessing it is when God brings someone into our lives to help with those unmet needs and what a blessing it is when we have the privilege of being a tool in His hands to help another. Is there someone who has blessed your life?

It took me a long, long time to bond with my eldest child in the early years of a very dysfunctional marriage. I recognized it was because he reminded me too much of his father - from a purely physical aspect. I accepted fully the responsibility to look after him and was conscientious in caring for all his needs (clothing, warmth, food, shelter, looking after him when sick, etc) but I wasn't able to feel a strong emotional tie with him in those early years. As he grew and matured, and as I matured more emotionally and spiritually, the bond between us grew stronger. Today, I love him dearly and am truly grateful for him and love being in his company. My feelings changed completely (over time) through the selfless love my second husband, Robin, showed for me. His love for me helped me to become closer to my Saviour which allowed my negative feelings for my first husband to be overcome and helped to heal me emotionally. This has permitted me to develop the close bond with my son that every parent should have with their children.

Thank you for your honest comments. I also struggled through a dysfunctional marriage and as a result of that and my childhood abuse, I shut down all of my emotions and became numb. This also affected my nurturing abilities. As I did the work to heal and as I felt the love of others, like Dixie, I was able to develop much closer relationships with my children. The moral of this story is that it is possible to heal and improve our relationships.
